Grade 9 Titanium (Ti-3Al-2.5V) (also known as “half 6-4”) is an alloy of titanium with 3% aluminum and 2.5% vanadium that has 20–50% more mechanical strength than commercially pure (CP) titanium grades but is more formable and weldable than Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5). Titanium Grade 18 (UNS R56322) is the same as Grade 9 except for the 0.04–0.08% palladium added to increase corrosion resistance. Their densities are 4.48 g/cc, which is less than 60% that of steel.

Applications
1. Aerospace
In the aerospace industry, Grade 9 Titanium (Ti-3Al-2.5V) is used for a variety of components. It is employed in the manufacturing of aircraft engine parts, such as compressor blades and shafts, due to its high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent fatigue resistance. It is also used for structural components like landing gear parts and airframe sections, where its corrosion resistance and ability to withstand high-impact loads are crucial.
2. Medical
The biocompatibility and corrosion resistance of Grade 9 Titanium makes it a popular choice for medical implants. Grade 9 Titanium (Ti-3Al-2.5V) is used for orthopedic implants such as hip and knee replacements, and dental implants. The alloy’s ability to integrate well with human tissue and its resistance to body fluids ensure the long-term success and safety of these implants.
3. Sports Equipment
In the sports equipment industry, Grade 9 Titanium (Ti-3Al-2.5V) is used to make high-performance products. For example, it is used in the production of bicycle frames, golf club shafts, and tennis racket frames. The lightweight and strong nature of the alloy provides athletes with equipment that offers enhanced performance and durability.
Industrial and Chemical Processing
In industrial and chemical processing plants, Grade 9 Titanium (Ti-3Al-2.5V) is used for pipes, valves, and heat exchangers. Its corrosion resistance allows it to handle corrosive chemicals and high-temperature fluids, ensuring the reliability and longevity of the equipment.
